Everyone deserves to work on something cool and I had the opportunity to work with twelve of the brightest people in talent to create a free ebook for all of you HR pros out there called Do Amazing Things, Things you can do to become a better HR pro in 2010 (download, 1.2Mb PDF). Big props to my friend Chris Ferdinandi for putting this all together. This is the first collaborative e-book he has put together for public consumption and I’ve got to say, if I organized this thing, it would look like a piece of garbage. Chris did a really fantastic job.
This thing is inspiring, it promotes action, and it comes together in a way that is actually quite poignant. Even if you skip my section. Strike that. Especially if you skip my section. Because if you’re a regular here, you’ve probably heard a version of it.
Who is featured? Some big hitters:
- China Miner Gorman from SHRM
- Michael VanDervort from Human Race Horses
- Chris Ferdinandi from Renegade HR
- Karla Porter from the Greater Wilkes-Barre Chamber in PA
- Paul Hebert from I2I
- Jim D’Amico, recruiter extraordinaire
- Victorio Milian of Creative Chaos Consultant
- Ben Eubanks from UpstartHR
- Steve Boese from Knowledge Infusion
- Nathaniel Rottenberg from Rypple
- Trish McFarlane from HR Ringleader
- Jessica Lee from APCO Worldwide
What kind of stuff is in there? Here’s an excerpt from my part:
You want to be great in HR in 2010? Here’s my suggestion: get out of HR and into other departments.
Wait. What? This about being great in HR. How can you be great in HR if you aren’t in HR? Just stick with me, it will be worth it.
I’ve worked with quite a few top performers in many different settings from every possible department. The one thing all of them had in common? They all made their co-workers and cross-departmental colleagues look like rock stars too. They hit their budgets and made our finance team look like they nailed it. They nailed our marketing messaging and acted like marketing had handed it down from Mt. Zion. And most importantly to me, they accurately forecast their staffing numbers, reduced needless turnover so I could be a more prepared recruiter and had minimal employee relations issues so that I could focus on better issues.
Most of the stuff in there is even better. You’ll just have to take a read though. Be inspired. Take action. Exude greatness.

Thank you and the others for an amazing contribution to the practice of HRM. Let’s hope HR pros everywhere read/learn/act.

Semi-off topic, but it’s hilarious that you use “exude greatness” in your post that mentions Chris. I told Chris one day that he needed to exude awesomeness, and he laughed at the word.
