Great points. It cannot be overstated how important it is for people to choose a career direction that really speaks to them. Once you identify what you love doing you can talk to the interviewers candidly and authentically without having to resort to all the superficial stuff people would have you focus on. When you speak from a genuine place of confidence, knowledge and interest in the job you will do just fine.

You also do the interviewers and yourself a favor when you focus on jobs that you will enjoy and where your performance will be stellar.

Regards,

Guy

Wow - great article! I like to think of it in terms of personal branding, particularly when you noted "Understand your unique value. What do you bring to the table?" I've mentioned to friends who ask me about job interviews to consider what their "candidate brand" is. What differentiates them from everyone else? But of course, don't be gimmicky - as you note, honest is best.

I like it. Straight to the point. I would add that to best answer the ultimate question you stated, you need also understand the motivation of that manager and how they see the role. Not what the role just says on paper. Thanks.

Thanks Jacob!

Eric: I agree. I love story telling as a compelling way to tell your unique value.

[...Understand your unique value..] Maybe we can highlight our unique value thru narrative story. We need to tell a compelling story about great achievements that we have done.

Lance, good job putting your finger right on what matters most.

I Stumbled this for you:

By the way, I have Jason Seiden's book next in line on my bookshelf after Stewart Friedman's Total Leadership which I'm on now. I hadn't heard any buzz about the Jason's book but Laurie's quick vote sounds good.
