Lance, just a general comment. I just wanted to say that I'm a big fan. As a former VP - HR at Pepsi, I love your blog and your HR insights. I check in to check out what you have to say on a regular basis. Your post really inspire and jolt my own thinking in a positive way. FYI - I've highlighted you as an HR blogger to follow and emulate in point #7 in my article on "No BS HR Career Strategies at:

         http://successinhr.com/no-bs-hr-career-strategies

Thanks again for all you do.

Best,
Alan

When times are tough I'm all for number three, when times are good I'm all for number three. Work is work, fun is fun. Puf chooses fun.

@Frank - Thanks! Glad you liked it. I love that Ford quote too.

@Sean - Very philosophical. Maybe too much for my tired brain :)

@Darcy - I think I remember seeing that as well. People that focus on the better things in life are happy (surprise!).

@Jason - I am skeptical of the weasel too but he had a great point. Thanks for sharing.

@Franny - You're welcome!

Great reminder. Although typcially skeptical of anything that comes from the mouth of that Silver-Tongued-Devil, Rick Neuheisel, I did also catch this during an interview on The Jim Rome Show as well. Have to admit, I liked it very much for the reasons you/Lance referenced.

I'm hoping these difficult times force us to get off the hampster wheel (usually due to someone else's decision) and re-examine our priorities and identify those things that truly bring joy to our lives. Then, take the steps necessary to build a life around activities/people. Working is a necessity and I take pride in working hard; however, it does not define all that I am as a person and hope it never does.

Time magazine published a very interesting article a few years ago highlighting research about happiness. http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,1015902-1,00.html
One of the interesting findings was that people who kept "gratitude journals" felt happier. It appears that focusing on what you do have and what makes you happy helps you to feel happier.
Taking the time to appreciate the good things about our work (like your #1 above) might help us to fill that bucket.

I try to remember the Buddhist idea that the greater your capacity for suffering you make the space for a greater capacity of joy. So my solution to keeping my bucket full is creating a bigger bucket. :)

Lance, it's such a good point -- it's important to keep the passion bucket filled, even when it seems like it takes too much energy to do that.

I always liked that Henry Ford quote: Whether you say you can or you can't, you're right. Your article made me smile. Thanks for that.
