Almost eight months ago, I considered changing my domain name and everyone told me to reconsider. I am not a very good listener though since I am here to tell you that YourHRGuy.com is now Rehaul.com.
The important stuff:
- Backlinks will continue to work
- Subscriber? You don’t need to do anything.
- Your comments? Still here.
- My posts? All there.
- Have a blogroll? Update it yo!
So why?
Simple: I wanted to follow my own advice.
I tell HR people that there is a great big world outside of HR that we need to explore, understand and embrace. And then I sit down at night and write a blog about HR, for HR, named Your HR Guy.
It felt weird. I love being Your HR Guy (that will always be a part of my identity) and I’ll obviously be holding on to the domain name for a long time but I want to really explore how people and businesses interact. And really, not all of that goes through HR. I’ve been holding on to this domain name for a while because I know I wanted to do something with it but I wasn’t sure what. This is a perfect opportunity to change over.
Why not just start a new blog?
No. Just no.
Where are HR topics going?
Nowhere. I am still going to talk about it obviously but I crave the freedom to explore how technology is changing our relationship with businesses both as a consumer and a worker. I want to talk about dumb marketing schemes, using attractive females on expo floors and social media screw ups. And I could do it under Your HR Guy but new readers need to understand what the site is about and it isn’t solely going to be about HR anymore.
So sit tight and thanks for joining me on this next iteration. I think you’re going to enjoy this.

Lance,
I know exactly how you feel. Great move and I look forward to all your blogs (HR and not).

Congrats on the name change (and now you’ll have an alias as “your HR guy”). I think your reasoning behind the change reflects what HR pros need to understand- that it is not just all about HR. It is about talking about other aspects of the business, having a solid understanding of finance, marketing, technology, and communications. I am excited to see where your discussion heads.
p.s. You’ll still by “my” HR guy though. : )

Lance – good stuff. You’re now the “artist formerly known as the HR Guy” to me. I’m sure this will be a success for you…

Good luck. Will be watching to see how your move of boldly going where no HR GUy has gone before works out!

Best of luck on the new site Lance! It is a fantastic idea and looks great.

Crap, do I have to change my feedburner?

Congrats buddy! I’ve been a loyal reader for a few years now, and while you always bring a unique perspective to HR, I think you will have some exciting things to say about the broader topic of company/people relationships. Looking forward to reading the new expanded blog!

I kow exactly how you about HR being a tad too restrictive – great site, great name, great concept. Keep writing!

@Gautam – Looking forward to it. I think you’ve already interspersed nuggets of great information outside of HR.
@Jenny – Thanks, me too!
@Joel – Thanks
@Trish – Yeah, I won’t shake that name.
@KD – “The blogger formerly known as Your HR Guy” works for me.
@Steve – Thanks!
@Rebecca – Me too.
@Laurie – No. You’re good. But you can if you want.
@Monica – Thanks, I felt I was holding back topics that would be interesting to my readers because it would be weird to see some of those posts on an HR blog.
@Lisa – Thanks!

I’m sure it will be interesting to explore this expanded path. Congrats Lance!

Lance, I wish you the best of luck and success in building this new brand but I think it’s a shame to tear down your previous successful brand when it might not be necessary.
Why not sell YourHRGuy to someone who could keep building that brand, and start Rehaul fresh?
As it is, if the new content will not be HR-oriented for the most part, the visitors coming to the YourHRGuy archives will be less motivated to stick around.

I don’t think it is totally out of line with my content direction but when most of my traffic starts coming direct again, I am more than happy to accept offers on YourHRGuy.com. I think people are worse served by having a dead website or broken links.
